8 Foods that make your Urine smell (other than Asparagus)

Have you ever settled into the restroom to do your business and listen to the calming sound of your yellow stream only to notice an awful smell?! You know what your pee should smell like so, an unfamiliar scent might be a sign of having consumed these foods:

Alcohol and coffee: Both alcohol and coffee cause smelly urine because they are diuretics. Shortly after you consume coffee or alcohol, you will likely need to urinate which can lead to dehydration. The uric acid or any other chemicals or vitamins in your urine become more concentrated and create a stronger smelling urine.

Garlic: Garlic is a very pungent food. It affects the odour of your breath, and your sweat. It contains methyl mercaptan which causes a smelly urine.

A keto diet: Just as going on super low carb diet makes your breath reek, it can do the same to your pee. When you enter a state of ketosis, your body releases ketones as it burns fat for fuel. Ketones affect your urine causing a bad odour.

Banana and chicken: Foods that contain lot of Vitamin B6 can cause urine to smell strongly if you eat enough of it. Vitamins that the body processes but doesn’t consume are eliminated through the urine which results in the odour.

Broccoli: Cruciferous vegetables can cause a strong smell in urine. This is because they contain methyl mercaptan which produces a bitter odour after their consumption.

Puffed wheat: Typically eaten as a breakfast cereal, puffed wheat can cause urine that gives off an odour like malt which is similar to the way it smells in your bowl!!

Chilli peppers: The skin of chilli peppers contains a neuropeptide called capsaicin which doesn’t break down after being digested. Because of this it is eliminated from the body as odoriferous.

Salmon: Salmon contains plenty of Vitamin B6 which is terrible for urine odour. It also brightens the colour of urine.

And, of course – Asparagus!

  • Breast cancer mostly develops in the upper quadrant which is not covered by a bra.
  • If there was a true association, there would be more cancer in the bra region. Hence, there is no proven link between wearing bras and the risk of breast cancer.

Sleeping in your bra or wearing your bra for too long can cause breast cancer

  • According to this myth wearing your bra every night or for too long prevents your pores from being able to breathe.
  • Sweat accumulates and toxins build up which are believed to cause breast cancer.
  • The same misconception applies for wearing a bra which is extremely tight and constricts your chest.
  • This myth has been refuted by leading cancer organizations.

What Does Lower your risk of Developing Breast Cancer?

So if you want to do what you can to lower the risk of developing breast cancer, experts recommend

  • eating well,
  • staying active,
  • knowing your personal risk,
  • doing regular self breast examination
  • and being screened appropriately.

As for your bra, go ahead and keep on wearing it if that’s what makes you feel comfortable.

Whether you like it or not, that is what you are currently getting.  The top producers of plastic waste have pledged to make more of their products recyclable in the face of public outcry. But, their efforts are more of a David Copperfield illusion than reality. 

The best way to tackle the world’s plastic problem is to eliminate the creation of plastics. But, the opposite is happening. Virgin plastic production is booming and expected to increase by 40 percent over the next decade. In the U.S., about $180 billion has been invested in new petrochemical plants for plastic manufacturing.

Meanwhile, more than 4 million tons of plastic debris pour into marine ecosystems every year. We are getting to the point where there will be more plastic garbage than fish in the oceans. Much of this will be single-use packaging.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle, the top purveyors of single-use plastic items that end up as marine debris have pledged to make their packaging 100 percent recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Wow, that sounds great, right? Not when you consider that only 9 percent of plastics are recycled. There’s a chronic need for better collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure and processes. Compostable plastics require industrial composting facilities, something that simply does not exist at that scale.

Some companies are attempting to reclaim as much end-of-life plastic as possible and incorporate it into new products. In theory, the recycled plastic would then displace virgin plastic. Despite eager buy-in from big corporations, none have pledged to reduce virgin plastic by any specific amount.

Last year “The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment” was created, an international agreement signed by over 290 corporations that collectively produce some 20 percent of the world’s plastic packaging. The agreement, which set goals for companies to recycle more and invest in closed-loop processes, is vague and allows signatories to sidestep the issue of new plastic production.

While many organizations are establishing recycling processes that divert plastics from the ocean, all of these combined will barely make a dent in the problem of ocean plastics. If corporations don’t take responsibility for their products after use, items made from reclaimed plastics could end up right back in the oceans.

Despite the recycling initiatives we see taking place around us, these are moot without reducing the amount of plastic produced.  As long as we’re manufacturing plastic as fast as we are, cleanup and recycling will never be enough.

Major corporations could make a bigger difference by getting rid of single-use plastic items from their operations. The virgin fossil-based plastic is where we definitely need to phase out. It’s sourced the wrong way. It has a climate impact. It has many problems from an environmental perspective.  Pressure needs to be kept up until virgin plastic production is dramatically reduced.  Over 300 million metric tons of new plastic are produced every year, and that number continues to climb.

Lower the risk of blood clots by drizzling olive oil on food once a week

Adding olive oil to your diet even once a week can lower your risk of suffering with occluded arteries. When arteries are occluded, it can trigger myocardial infarction and stroke.

People who are overweight are at increased risk of heart attack. The choice of eating olive oil may have the potential to help change that risk.

Platelets are blood cell fragments that stick together and form lumps and blood clots when activated. It is found that people who eat olive oil at least once a week had lower platelet activation as compared to participants who ate it less frequently and that the lowest levels of platelet aggregation were observed among those people who eat olive oil more often.

Olive oil contains phenols which have been found evident in fighting clotting in lab tests. Olive oil boosts a component of HDL know as apoA- IV. This helps protect against platelet aggregation that can cause heart attacks and Ischemic strokes.

Platelet activity increases after eating explaining why heart attacks more likely to occur after heavy meals. ApoA-IV helps platelets to stick together which is an early step in the development of a blood clot. So the ability of the olive oil to boost apoA-IV can help prevent a cardiovascular catastrophe.

Farmacy’s food bank which provides healthy foods–heavy on fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-sodium options, is one of a number of groundbreaking efforts that finally consider food a critical part of a patient’s medical care.  They treat food as medicine that can have as much power to heal as drugs.

So far, the several hundred people who rely on the Fresh Food Farmacy have lowered their risk of serious diabetes complications by 40% and cut hospitalizations by 70% compared with other diabetic people in the area who don’t have access to the program.  This year, on the basis of its success so far, the Fresh Food Farmacy is tripling the number of patients it supports.

More studies are revealing that people’s health is the sum of much more than the medications they take and the tests they get.  Health is affected by how much you sleep and exercise, how much stress you have and what you are eating at every meal. Food is becoming a particular focus of doctors, hospitals, insurers and even employers who are frustrated by the slow progress of drug treatments in reducing food-related diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and even cancer.

A  growing body of research supports the idea that when people eat well, they stay healthier and are more likely to control chronic diseases and perhaps even avoid them altogether.  When you prioritize food and teach people how to prepare healthy meals it can end up being more impactful than medications.

And doctors at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco hand out recipes instead of (or along with) prescriptions for their patients, pulled from the organization’s Thrive Kitchen, which also provides low-cost monthly cooking classes for members of its health plan.

Doctors alone can’t accomplish this food transformation. Recognizing that healthier members not only live longer but also avoid expensive visits to the emergency room, insurers are starting to reward healthy eating by covering sessions with nutritionists and dietitians. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts covers tailored meals from the nonprofit food program Community Servings for its members with congestive heart failure who can’t afford the low-fat, low-sodium meals they need.

The idea of food as medicine is not only an idea whose time has come, it’s an idea that’s absolutely essential to the health care system.
