How does a Vegan diet affect your body?

vegan diet

Even though it is not a new concept, veganism is becoming trendier day-by-day and attracting a lot of attention. What does it mean to follow a vegan diet though?

Many people mistake veganism with vegetarianism. Veganism is not only a dietary choice but also comes with many lifestyle choices that exclude the consumption and usage of all types of animal products.

Veganism is the more stringent form of vegetarianism. Vegan diets strictly exclude not only meat, fish, and poultry but milk or any other dairy products as well. Is there any health benefit of such food habit? Let’s see:

  • Exclusion of animal fats is one of the most advantageous features of vegan diets as animal fats contain a high level of cholesterol, that is why are associated with several types health conditions e.g. hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac diseases, etc.
  • The risk of prostate and colorectal cancer is significantly higher in meat eaters than those who don’t consume meats. In addition, the vegan diet comprises fruits and vegetables that contain a higher level of fibres, vitamins, and minerals
  • Your bone health completely depends on your intake of elements like calcium and phosphate that mostly comes from milk and other dairy products. However, that doesn’t mean vegan diets lack calcium. Figs, kale, black-eyed peas, spinach, and turnip greens are good sources of calcium. Besides, milk alternatives like soymilk, almond milk is becoming popular and widely available.
  • The risk of obesity is much lower in the vegans than others on traditional diets. This is because your total calorie intake is much lower when you are on a vegan diet than that when you follow a standard diet. Not to mention, lower the risk of obesity lower the risk of cardiac health conditions.
  • A number of studies reveal that vegan dietary habits can prevent and protect you from genetic chronic disease. Plant compounds can contribute in controlling genetic conditions like arterial plaque, cardiovascular disease, and tumour growth.

Chock-full of nutrients, a vegan diet can be a thoughtful choice as it eliminates the risk of numerous health conditions. In addition, fruits and vegetables contain a high amount of antioxidants which help you look fresh and feel energetic.

Coenzyme Q10: Magic for Healthy Skin

Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 also known as ubiquinoneis an enzyme produces naturally in the human body and is found in every cell and tissue. It is involved in a number of biological functions:
1. Helping to produce energy
2. Neutralizing free radicals
3. Keeping the cells both inside the body and the skin healthy
Coenzyme Q10 is found not only in supplements but also in beauty products. A benefit of Coenzyme Q10 lies in it’s antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are naturally existing compounds which have been shown to protect cells in your body against damage.
Coenzyme Q10 is widely known for it’s skincare benefits in topical creams but not many are familiar with oral supplements. Taken orally, coenzyme Q10 is more beneficial than topical lotions alone.

Various skincare benefits of coenzyme Q10 are:

  • It energizes skin: Your skin has plenty of CoQ10 and has lots of energy – energy needed to repair and make sure that the skin cells are healthy.
  • Protects again photo ageing- It specifically means premature ageing due to overexposure to the sun. Sun is the fastest skin ager. If you don’t believe me, just compare the skin of your face with the skin of your back(which is hardly exposed)
  • Rejuvenates skin by stimulating skin cell activity – Active skin cells get rid of toxins easily and make better use of nutrients. When your skin ages, all these processes slow down causing dull and wrinkled skin. Boost your skin cell activity by CoQ10.
  • It stimulates collagen production: Collagen is the protein that decreases with age leading to wrinkles and leathery skin
  • It is a potent antioxidant that acts against oxidative damage- This damage is done by – For eg. – UV Ray’s of the sun, pollination, toxins, stress. And this damage all lead to one thing – premature ageing.

Is BPA-FREE Plastic really safe to use?

UNFOLDING THE MYTHS BEHIND ‘BPA-FREE’ PLASTICS

All is not safe in the world of BPA-free plastics. Let’s look at how plastics labelled as ‘BPA-free’ are actually not quite different from their BPA versions.

From reusable water bottles, plastic plates, to the liners in the canned foods, BPA (Bisphenol A) can be found.

BPA is proven to have a disruptive impact on normal hormone functions. With an explosion of research on BPA in the past few years, many studies have shed light on its negative effect on wildlife in terms of their reproductive and metabolic functions. These side effects are not just limited to the world of animals, but also have a grave impact on human reproductive functions that can be carried from generation to another.

As more and more companies moved away from using BPA in their products, a rise in BPA-free products started to gain momentum. After a few years, different versions of the BPA-free plastics like the BPS, BPF, BPZ, and many more became common in everyday products.

What is surprising that despite been tagged as BPA-free, these all basically contain a similar chemical structure to that of BPA, with just slight differences in each of them. So, all is not safe in the world of BPA-free plastics. The truth is, BPA or any of its variations, are very likely to disrupt the early reproductive functions in animals as well as humans.

What is now required is the regulation and banning of chemicals like BPA by class and not individually. As consumers, we can limit our use of plastics by replacing them with other sustainable alternatives like glass and steel.
