Toothpaste is good for you, right? Don’t be so sure!

Harmful Effects of Toothpaste on your Health

Brushing your teeth early in the morning is a ritual many of us have followed since childhood. But, what if I told you that the toothpaste you are using contains a harmful component which creates havoc in your gut! It’s alarming.

Toothpaste contains an antibacterial and antifungal agent called “triclosan”. It’s added to toothpaste to fight against harmful germs found in plaque. Over the years adverse effects from triclosan have been discovered and the FDA has banned consumer brands from using it in their products.

Triclosan and Gut Bacteria

A recent study has shown that triclosan affects your gut bacteria which in turn control digestion and your immune system. It changes your gut’s microbial population and increases the risk of colon cancer by promoting inflammation.

Further studies are required to determine a scientifically safe level of triclosan in toothpaste.

Colgate, one of the leading toothpaste brands in the world, stated that triclosan is added to toothpaste to reduce the risk of gingivitis which is caused by harmful germs in your mouth.

Other Negative Side Effects of Tricolsan

Apart from attacking the gut health, there were some additional harmful effects of triclosan found when tested on animals. These were,

  • Weakening of heart muscles
  • Change in the shape of sperm
  • Deformation of the bones

The amount of triclosan used in such animal tests is high compared to what humans are exposed to, however, these results cannot be ignored.

Some researchers also found that triclosan accumulates on the bristles of your toothpaste and stays there even if you change to non-triclosan toothpaste.

If you are serious about your oral (and gut!) health, stop using the toothpaste containing triclosan. Take notice of the ingredients section on your toothpaste carton.

Visit your Dentist regularly and get a professional clean done. Probiotics to improve gut health are also helpful.

MoonDust ToothPowder is Triclosan free.
