6 Lifestyle Tips That Can Keep You Looking and Feeling Young

Are you feeling every one of your years lately? Well there is good news! Chronological age is not the only determinant of health and wellness. You can feel healthier and younger by following these seven lifestyle tips.

Ready to make healthier choices? Shop at Groceries for Health for authentic, locally
sourced, and organic products!

1. Exercise Daily

Exercising regularly is, perhaps, the most critical determinant of how fast you age. Not only
does physical activity immediately reduce your stress and boost your mood, but MedlinePlus notes it also provides many long-lasting health benefits:

  • Improvements in bone density and muscle strength
  • Reduction in cardiovascular disease
  • Better weight control
  • A boost to your immune system
  • Relief from arthritis
  • Decreased risk of cancer and diabetes
  • Relief from depression and anxiety
  • Increase in longevity

The type of exercise doesn’t matter as long as you achieve your target heart rate for at least 20 minutes a day. Also, it’s helpful to incorporate more movement into your daily life. Take stairs instead of the elevator and park a greater distance from the mall or office to sneak in extra steps. To round out your exercise, and to aid in stretching and strengthening, consider taking up yoga. Sixty + Me explains that with live streaming classes for all experience levels, you can improve your posture, enhance your balance, ward off back pain and feel younger.

Tracking your progress is both motivating and encourages accountability, and it doesn’t need to be a burden. You can monitor your achievements through any number of fitness trackers, all of which can be customized with fun accessories like funky or elegant bands. If you prefer paper and pen for tracking, a beautiful, personalized wellness journal can be just the ticket.

2. Drink Enough Water

Every cell and organ in your body requires water to perform, and when you become dehydrated, the health impacts can be severe. To ensure that your body has enough water to function properly, hydrate throughout the day. Thirst is often an accurate guide to when you should drink, and Livestrong notes sometimes you might even feel hungry. In general, it’s best to aim for at least 2.7 litres per day if you are a woman and 3.7 litres if you are a man.

3. Prioritize Sleeping

Consistently getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for your health. Inadequate sleep hygiene can decrease your level of focus and energy while increasing anxiety and depression. There are also physical consequences, including weight gain, elevated risk of heart disease, and increased inflammation. To optimize your sleep, try implementing a few of these suggestions to help you get the rest you need:

  • Invest in a quality mattress and pillow
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
  • Keep your bedroom temperature around 65°F
  • Increase natural light exposure during the day
  • Decrease blue light exposure in the evening
  • Avoid both caffeine and alcohol late in the day

4. Improve Your Gut Health

Per Healthline, your gut microbiome influences many aspects of your wellness. When unhealthy microbes overtake their healthy counterparts, the imbalance can negatively impact how you feel. By taking a probiotic every day, you can boost the number of beneficial microbes, and in turn, may improve digestion, reduce bloating, increase your immunity, and reduce inflammation.

5. Take a Technology Break

In today’s high-tech world, a lot of people are constantly connected to their phones or
computers. While you probably can’t avoid using a laptop for your work, Kitchy Living points out you can take a social media hiatus. Scheduling a break from Facebook and other social platforms can free up mental space and give you critical time to reflect. Once you try it, you might decide that the peace and calm you’ve gained is worth keeping.

6. Revitalize Your Living Space

There are times when a home can feel unorganized and stressful rather than peaceful and
nurturing. Perhaps there is discord among family members, or maybe your house feels messy and chaotic.

Infuse your home with better energy by making simple changes. First, let in some fresh air by opening windows. Next, devote a few hours to cleaning and decluttering the house. You may be surprised to see how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time. Finally, add a few small touches to brighten up the space. Candles, fairy lights, or a new set of bed linens can provide a positive improvement for little money.

Adopting some or all of these suggestions can improve your wellness and mitigate the effects of aging. By making wiser choices today, you can help ensure a better tomorrow!

Exercise Regularly to Improve your Life (and keep disease at bay)

exercise regularly to improve your life

When it comes to exercise, the benefits are countless, yet, a lot of people do not consider spending a small chunk of their day indulging in exercise.

Not only does it make your bones healthy and strong, but also strengthens your muscles, helps with your balance and is advantageous for your overall health.

Looking after our health is vital to living a long and happy life. But how do you ensure that you’re looking after all aspects of your well-being? This blog is part of a series of seven blogs on this topic.

Seven Elements for Well-being

We’ve come up with a list of seven elements that we believe contribute to living a healthy, happy life. Over the next weeks we’ll look at them one by one –

Fire – Take a daily dose of sun and grab some vitamin D
Water – Hydration is fundamental and bathing is pretty important too!
Air – Fresh air, take it in with simple breathing exercises
Earth – Grounding through Meditation (the importance of controlling your thoughts and relaxing your mind) and Family (embrace your close relationships to share experiences and life milestones)
Exercise – There’s no denying how vital exercise is to health and we discuss several types with big benefits
Keeping it Simple – Bartering, working to support your lifestyle and reducing material stressors

A little activity throughout the day keeps you mentally and physically fit. Exercise can be anything from squats, cycling, swimming, walking, and running to taking the stairs or even cleaning the house or pushing a grocery cart.

The Benefits of Regular Exercise

  • Assists with weight loss
  • Good for bones and muscles
  • Makes you feel joyous, releases endorphins
  • Aids in better sleeping and rest
  • Relaxes the mind and improves memory

Although there are various forms of exercises, several are really vital to your health. These include core strength exercise, resistance training and bone strength exercise.

Core Strength Exercise

This type of exercise strengthens your core muscles which include the muscles of the back back, abdominal and pelvic muscles. When you have strong core muscles, you can carry out many physical activities with great ease and achieve good upright posture.

Among the core strength exercises are crunches, plank, bridge, bird dog, side plank, bicycle crunch and warrior crunch.

Resistance Training

Resistance training is a form of exercise which helps to improve your endurance and muscular fitness. These type of exercises cause your muscles to contract in opposition to a type of external resistance.

Exercises in resistance training include use of medicine balls, weight machines, resistance bands, your own body weight and, free weights.

Bone Strength Exercise

Exercise is crucial for bone health and aids in preventing osteoporosis by building bone density. Forms of weight bearing physical activity will help to keep your bones healthy. So, partaking in exercises like walking, climbing, gymnastics, dancing, and lifting weights can help to improve your bone strength.

Daily exercise is not only good for your fitness but also enhances your mental health and can improve your mood. Adequate daily exercise can prevent or minimise chronic diseases and their effects and, thereby potentially increasing your life span.

As well as regular exercise, healthy eating including buying organic food for yourself and your family is of utmost importance.

The Large Intestine: A Key Player in Your Gut

The Large Intestine: A Key Player in Your Gut

The large intestine plays a critical role in our overall health and well-being. Many of us take it for granted, or simply believe it’s just “our stomach” and what we consume has no effect on it.

What does the large intestine do?

This organ is about six feet long and consists of the cecum, the colon, the rectum and the anus. One of the primary functions of the large intestine is maintaining a bacterial population of over 700 different species. How we take care of ourselves (mostly our diet) is directly related to the balance that we have with all of those bacteria.

Some of the key benefits from the bacteria in the large intestine include boosting our immune system, producing vitamins such as vitamin K and B, stimulating the release of hormones, and influencing our mood and overall wellbeing. The benefits are endless when it comes to the vast array of bacteria in our gut!

Another key function of the large intestine is the elimination and formation of faeces. The residual water from the small intestine is converted to faeces, which is made up of indigestible food, bacteria, inorganic salts and epithelial cells.

Vitamin absorption is another primary function of the large intestine. The vitamins absorbed are actually produced by its own bacteria, allowing it to breakdown any remaining fibre and polysaccharides (carbohydrates). An individual’s diet can affect vitamin deficiencies, especially if they are taking antibiotics.

The absorption of water and electrolytes, antibody production and acid reduction are all added benefits of the large intestine. Water is absorbed through the process of osmosis, and sodium is absorbed through the sodium/potassium pump located within the colon.

A large portion of our immune system is actually within the large intestine, comprised of the lymphoid tissues. These tissues assist with the creation of antibodies which in turn fight off harmful bacteria, preventing infections within our bodies. The mucosa of the large intestine also allows for acid neutralization, protecting against microbial infections.

How to keep it healthy

Increasing your overall wellness is a crucial aspect to keeping your large intestine healthy. One key habit to maintaining overall gut health is to eat frequent, small meals. This will boost your metabolism and aid in preventing any digestive issues. Make it a goal to consume 5-6 smaller, balanced meals including fibre, protein and whole foods (nothing processed).

When choosing fibrous foods, some great choices include fruits, vegetable, legumes and whole grains. Another impactful habit to create is to drink plenty of water daily. Your goal should be to drink 2 litres of water daily. The benefits of hydration for your body are endless, and you will experience an increase in energy and overall wellness.

Remember that you are only given one body, and your job is to care for it to the best of your ability. Your body needs the right fuel, just like your car. Educate yourself on the proper nutrients you need and you will reap the benefits from making healthier choices for your gut health. Once you create these healthy habits, stick to them! Your body will thank you in the long run.

Family – Your Support System in Every Walk of Life

family your support system

The definition of family keeps evolving with the advancement of each era, but what remains consistent is the love and care that you get in your family. It is a part of you that protects you since your birth. People who are adopted also gain a new family that truly loves them.

Your family help you to meet your basic needs like food, shelter and water in life. It provides you with a sense of financial security until you can be self-dependent and sometimes even after that. A family will always embrace you and encourage you to achieve greater things in life.

Looking after our health is vital to living a long and happy life. But how do you ensure that you’re looking after all aspects of your well-being? This blog is part of a series of seven blogs on this topic.

A Healthy Family Knows Healthy Eating is Key

Having a family provides you a sense of belonging when you feel alone. If you have a family, you are more privileged than you can think. Talking about family is well and good, but it is also important to maintain healthy living in your family.

Eating healthy, buying organic food, and investing in organic skincare is also essential to keep your family happy and healthy. Consuming organics food means you get to consume fresh food, with fewer pesticides, nutrient rich, better for the environment and amazing for your overall health.

Involve Your Family in Your Life

Due to the advancement in technology, everyone today is busy in their own life. You may come to the realisation that you do not give enough time to your family. Try and avoid this and make time for family as a top priority.

Whether it is a good day or bad day, your highs or lows, always consider sharing it with your family and friends. Milestones, big decisions and life lessons shared with your family and friends, they will encourage you to do so and also provide you amazing ideas in life.

Having a family is privilege that not everyone enjoys, therefore, those of you who have a wonderful family should cherish every moment with them and embrace and love them unconditionally.

The Amazing Benefits of Exercise for your Mental Health

The Amazing Benefits of Exercise for your Mental Health

There’s a lot more to exercising than aerobic capacity and achieving muscle growth.

People who exercise state they sleep better, have sharper memories, energy to burn throughout the day, and are more positive and relaxed about themselves and their lives.

Exercise is a powerful medicine for people challenged with common mental health issues.

Depression and Exercise

Exercising regularly causes changes to occur in the brain, including reduced inflammation, neural growth, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of well-being and calm.

Anxiety and Exercise

Regular exercise boosts mental and physical energy, relieves stress and tension, and enhances general well-being through the release of endorphins.

ADHD and Exercise

Regular exercise improves motivation, concentration, mood, and memory, reducing the symptoms of ADHD. Physical activity has an instantaneous effect on the brain, like boosted serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels; positively affecting attention and focus.

Additional  Mental Health Benefits of Exercise

  • Improved self-esteem
  • Clearer thinking, sharper memory
  • Increased energy
  • Better night’s sleep
  • Greater resilience

Help! I Don’t Like Exercising!

It’s common for people struggling with mental health issues to put obstacles in the way of regular exercise.

Feeling of Overwhelm: Consider exercise a priority and vital to your well-being, and you’ll soon find ways to include small amounts of exercises into your busy schedule.

Feeling Exhausted: Understanding that regular exercise can increase your energy levels and dramatically reduce fatigue could change your way of thinking about exercise. Feeling exhausted? Try a fast 5-minute walk!

Feeling Hopeless: Change your mood with a few minutes of daily, low-impact activities, like dancing or walking.

Feeling Pain: Try exercising in water to reduce muscle or joint discomfort, or divide your exercise time into frequent, short bursts of activity.

Feeling Bad About Yourself: There’s no quicker way to feel better about yourself than accomplishing just one small fitness goal. Both body confidence and self-appreciation will improve.

How To Begin When You Have a Mental Health Issue

It’s difficult to begin an exercise program when you’re feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, or have another mental health problem.

Be comfortable: Choose comfortable clothing and a calming or energising setting.

Start small: Set small, achievable goals.

Make exercise a social activity: Many thoroughly enjoy exercise when working out with a loved one or friend.

Reward yourself: You did great, so reward yourself!

Choose an enjoyable activity: Any activity that gets you moving is perfect.
