Every year, on New Year’s Eve we make certain resolutions. Thigs like – “I will eat healthily”, “I will no longer associate with toxic people”, “I will start my own business”, “I will step out of my comfort zone” so far, and so forth. While all these resolutions are super positive, and a great way to start the year, the whole concept of resolution is something that needs to be left behind.
If you ask us, quite honestly, the whole concept of making resolutions is quite hard to follow. How can you just decide one thing by reflecting on your past experiences and commit to not do any of those things from the next day onwards?
Sure, change is great. Change is important and change is necessary. But change takes time. By having resolutions, we only force change on ourselves and because change takes time it also takes practice, and failures, and more practice!
Think About the Present
Stop thinking too much about the past or the future. Think about what the present holds. Calm yourself and do not focus too much on the future. Remember, the most important time is the time you are living in right now. Keep yourself calm and composed by focusing on what makes you happy at the moment.
It is okay to slip at times. This is why resolutions are bad. Anytime you slip, you start feeling like you did something wrong. Like you failed at your resolution. However, that’s untrue. That is why resolutions are wrong. They make you feel forced towards a direction, no matter if it makes you happy or not.
Prioritize Yourself
Thinking about the present is the first step you need to focus on, and with that, you need to prioritize yourself. You need to choose yourself every day and do what makes you happy. Do not make decisions that are based on other’s people’s happiness. Do not choose to live in a way only to please someone else. Your only priority should be you. Because at the end of the day, you are what matters.
People will always have something negative to say. No matter what you do, they will have opinions to give. So, what you can do is keep yourself as the priority and focus on your happiness alone.
It is Okay to Slip
Always know that it is okay to slip a little. It is okay to make mistakes and it is okay to fail. You wanted to eat healthily but you ate something unhealthy? It is okay. Wanted to take a break from your old toxic friends but had a good time with them again? It is okay. All these slips and failures are normal. Do not be too hard on yourself. Take it easy and go with the flow.
Your only priority should be to stay happy. Do things that make you happy even if that means going against the so-called resolutions. Do what will make you have a good night’s sleep because, at the end of the day, your happiness is what matters, not any kind of diet, people, or other things.
