According to the two studies recently The BMJ, it has been found that the consumption of processed foods can lead to various heart diseases and also a higher death risk. Data has been collected from various people in France and Spain. Both the surveys linked processed food with heart disease and a higher risk of death. It has also been noted as the beginning of a public health problem. The increase in the purchase and consumption of processed food can also increase the human and economic burden of various chronic diseases.

The consequences related to processed food:

Processed food includes food items like meats with additives, mass-produced snacks, food that contains flavouring agents, frozen meals and many more. According to the French study which was led by Bernard Srour, it has been found that people who consumed the highest amount of these foods, had 13% of higher risk for coronary heart diseases and 11% higher risk for the disease that limits the flow of blood to the brain, also known as cerebrovascular disease.

According to the Spanish study which was led by Maira Bes-Rastrollo, it has been a 62% increase of mortality for those people who consumed more than four servings of processed food in a day. It has been found that with each serving, the death risk is increased by 18%.

The reason behind the health problem

According to the French survey, it points to the cumulative effect of various food additives like emulsifiers or dies. It also includes artificial sweeteners like saccharine, aspartame and many more can actually affect the way in which the body processes glucose. According to the Spanish study, the heating used in the processing of food produces various contaminants like acrylamide.
